As the country's fourth largest city, Houston is among the most popular destinations for travelers, according to Trip Advisor. And it’s no surprise to locals that one of the city's major draws is the Houston Museum District. The District is home to thousands of masterpieces, historic relics and groundbreaking science experiments, just waiting to be discovered. On Saturday, September 15, Houston will celebrate the 16th annual Museum District Day. Once again, 18 museums will be free and many museums will host special events and exhibits. Many of the museums are free all year round, but Museum District Day is a truly special occasion with a variety of fun and educational opportunities. Visitors are encouraged to walk from one museum to another, but free pedicabs will also be available — a new addition to the festivities.
Participating museums include: Asia Society Texas Center, Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, Children's Museum of Houston, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Czech Center Museum Houston, The Health Museum, Holocaust Museum Houston, Houston Center for Photography, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Rothko Chapel, Houston Museum of Natural Science, The Jung Center of Houston, The John C. Freeman Weather Museum, Museum of African American Culture, Lawndale Art Center, The Menil Collection, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Rice University Art Gallery.

Celebrate 20 years of artist studios at Lawndale and 5 years of the Lawndale Artist Studio Program with Tasteful Art, a special tasting event featuring local contemporary artists and chefs. Lawndale brings together “foodies” and “arties” for this unique event featuring the culinary canvas that is the plate. Experience what happens when chefs David Buehrer (Greenway Coffee/Blacksmith), German Mosquera (Roots urban Bistro), Randy Rucker (Briar and Bramble), Erin Smith (Plonk) and Jody Stevens (Jodycakes) turn over the plating to past and current Lawndale Artist Studio Program artists Nancy Douthey, Seth Mittag, David Politzer, Teresa O’Connor, Patrick Turk and David Waddell. The chefs provide the delicious ingredients and the artists create magic on the plate.
The culinary culmination will be revealed as guests are treated to a tasting of dishes from some of the most innovative chefs in Houston today, hosted by award winning Executive Chef, Barbara McKnight, founder of CULINAIRE. Adult beverages will also be served in the beautiful setting of the historic Hofheinz House. Other surprises are also in store. All proceeds benefit Lawndale’s Artist Studio Program and programs throughout the year.

This artistic practice takes as its theoretical and practical point of departure a human rotating an object in space. The role of this practice is to demonstrate a model of action within the existing form along with its new contexts in relation to its scale. Sloan, the collaborating artist, will serve as a catalyst of James Ciosek's Human Hamster Wheel.

Exalting the Human Hamster Wheel as an icon of monotonous amusement, Continuum will create a deranged and twisted carnival environment around it, featuring belly dancers, hermaphrodites, a kissing booth, lion taming lessons, failed magic, palm readers and other enhanced oddities. In addition, there will be site specific performances inside the wheel. Bring quarters and dimes to enter the attractions.

Flickering, Fleeting and Fast
Friday, Janaury 25, 2013
Using a slide projector, 1960s nude images from the “Verboten Collection” will be produced on one end of James Ciosek’s Human Hamster Wheel. In this exploration, a static slide image with appear, morph and disappear based upon the movement of the wheel. The individual animating the wheel will not be able to view the image that his/her motion is working to produce. “The Verboten Collection” contains nude slides, images, negatives, rare books and manuscripts gathered over many years by an anonymous party and gifted to Kleinhans. This will be the 4th public viewing of parts of the Collection.
Using a number of lighted party swords affixed around the center point of the Human Hamster Wheel, a changing series of animations will be created in and around the sculpture. The use of light, motion and human power is a recurring theme in Kleinhans’ studio works.

The Trailer • The Bridge Club
Thursday, March 21, 2013
2 - 4 PM Interactive Archiving Station
6 - 8 PM Performance
The Trailer, a project by The Bridge Club collaborative, is an installation and mobile series of live performance works centered around and inside of a vintage camping trailer. The Trailer will premiere March, 21 2013 at Lawndale Art Center. This project embodies a search for what is distinct in our increasingly homogenous culture, while addressing our simultaneous and conflicting desires for adventure and security, experience and memory.
Prior to the live performance (2 - 4 PM), the trailer will be set up as an archiving station to allow the artists to engage with the public in a dialogue about the project and upcoming performance. Visitors will be invited to contribute stories in response to a series of questions about objects, places, pets and memories that hold importance to them. Responses will be recorded in the form of handwritten text, sound recordings, hand-drawn maps and on postcards. Visitors will receive a signed commemorative item from the artists in exchange for these contributions. Contributed stories will be incorporated into the trailer installation and into future performance actions, and contributors will be encouraged to follow the project online (through the project website www.bridgeclubtrailer.com) to see how their own contributions might emerge as the project evolves.
During the subsequent live performance (6 - 8 PM), audiences will be invited to explore the trailer installation and interact with its objects while the four costumed members of The Bridge Club are engaged in a variety of performance activities in and around the trailer. Performance actions will relate to remembering past or planning future experiences, seeming not to acknowledge their current locale. In this way, the live action of the performances will conflate lived and collected experience, and invoke the role of memory in authenticity.
