Dream Cars: Innovative Designs, Visionary Ideas
Sarah Schleuning
Curator of Decorative Arts and Design,
High Museum of Art

From fantastical rendering to realized cars, visionary automotive designs influence the automotive industry and investigate the role innovative design played in challenging the notions of what is both stylistically and technologically possible. Dream Cars will discuss several influential concept cars from 1934 to today addressing some of the individual visionaries who made them a reality, the profound influence of aerodynamics and aeronautics had on these designs, and the groundbreaking automotive fairs that placed them in the international spotlight.

Sarah Schleuning is curator of decorative arts and design at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia. Her previous positions include curator and head of the fellowship program at The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, Miami Beach, Florida and assistant curator at Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Schleuning holds an M.A. in the history of decorative arts from Parsons School of Design/Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, and a B.A. from Cornell University. She has curated several exhibitions relating to modern decorative arts and contemporary design including Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas, Joris Laarman: Design in the Digital Age, and Fashioning the Modern French Interior. Her most recent publications include Dream Cars: Innovative Design, Visionary Ideas, Earl Pardon’s “Portable Art”, Moderne: Fashioning the French Interior and Weapons of Mass Dissemination: The Propaganda of War. Schleuning is currently collaborating on several projects including co-curating exhibitions on contemporary Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen with the Groninger Museum.
