Although generally valued for their ability to capture the surface appearance of the physical world, photographs can also serve as an index to the nebulous and frequently immeasurable inner lives of individuals. Using Kelli Connell’s photographs in the exhibition Double Life as a point of departure, this lecture historically considers how photographers have used their images to both explore and assert their selfhoods.
