Mark Anthony Neal The Birth of NewBlackness

Assistant Professor, American Studies, UT Austin

January 24, 2004 – January 24, 2004

Lawndale presents The Birth of NewBlackness, a lecture by Mark Anthony Neal associated with Odabenga Jones’ exhibition, Symmetrical Patterns of Def.

“NewBlackness embodies a radical fluidity within the spheres of blackness that allow for powerful conceptualizations across black genders, sexualities, ethnicities, generations, socio-economic positions and socially constructed performances of ‘black’ identity.”

In this lecture, Neal discusses embodiments of NewBlackness in art as varied as the poetry of Audre Lorde and the music of The Family Stand and Meshell Ndegeocello.
