Studio Artist
Guadalupe Hernandez is a multidisciplinary artist based in Houston, Texas. His work explores themes of family, labor, and cultural practices through paintings and cut-paper pieces inspired by the Mexican folk art tradition of Papel Picado. Dedicated to preserving and advancing this tradition, Hernandez blends time-honored techniques with contemporary imagery and narratives.
In 2024, he was awarded the Jones Artist Award by the Houston Endowment, and, in 2023, he received the Nest Heritage Craft Prize for his commitment to sustaining and evolving the art of Papel Picado. In 2022, he was selected as one of six artist pairs for the US Latinx Art Forum Mentorship Program, supporting intergenerational exchange among Latinx artists.
Hernandez has participated in artist residencies with the Art Students League of Denver, Asia Society Texas Center, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and Project Row Houses. His work has been exhibited at institutions including the Asia Society Texas Center, Blaffer Art Museum, Chicano Park Museum, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, and the McNay Art Museum.
